EU presence ran through GermanHaus — a familiar European anchor at SXSW
On Friday March 13th, the European Union’s SXSW activities were concentrated into a single evening program under EU@SXSW, hosted at GermanHaus in downtown Austin’s Speakeasy.
GermanHaus is not new as it has been one of the most consistent European presences at SXSW over the years — a platform where German startups, corporates, policymakers, and creatives come together. In practice, it has also acted as a broader European meeting point, especially when no unified EU or Nordic house exists, like in 2026.
Instead of a larger EU House or Pavilion, the EU in the USA activities was condensed into a one day curated program:
- AI and future of work panel
- Fireside discussion on digital life
- EU meet-up for networking
- “European Beats” live music showcase
Alongside this, an interactive walkthrough on children’s online safety ran throughout the day, adding a more experiential layer.

EU in the US — long-term presence, lighter footprint at SXSW
The European Union has been steadily increasing its presence in US innovation ecosystems through initiatives tied to digital policy, startups, and transatlantic collaboration over the years. At SXSW, the EU has typically participated through:
- partnerships with national houses (like GermanHaus)
- policy-driven panels (AI, regulation, digital rights)
- networking formats connecting European and US stakeholders
In earlier years, this sometimes translated into a more visible “EU layer” on top of national activations, and for example Finns and other Nordics have done MobileMonday signature events at the EU House.
In 2026, the approach was lighter as there was no standalone EU house, no large centralized branding, instead: targeted sessions, shared venues, and collaboration with existing platform, the GermanHaus. The Speakeasy venue was great for all the activations, like the European Beats performances

As with the Nordic, also the European presence at SXSW is still there, but it’s shifting and is less about visibility, more about relevance and connections. GermanHaus remains one of the key anchors making that possible. But as the Nordic House is heavily missed, so is the EU House. We know that the SXSW 2027 plans are starting at around these times, and hoping for next level collaboration for enhanced relevance and connections, among Nordics and especially the EU. Happy to be involved!
