Finnish Startups Raised a Record Funding Last Year

The funding raised by Finnish startups has reached historic levels, according to the latest impact report from the startup hub Maria 01. Sarita Runeberg, CEO of Maria 01, points out that economically challenging times have historically been the birthplace of many successful companies. She remains confident about the future.

Finnish startups succeeded in raising capital in record-breaking fashion last year. As early as last November, the Finnish Venture Capital Association (FVCA) estimated that the total amount invested in Finnish startups for the full year would exceed €1.5 billion. Maria 01’s recent impact report confirms this trend, showing that Finland ranks at the very top of Europe when funding is measured relative to population.

Larger Rounds, Fewer Deals

While the size of funding rounds has grown, the total number of deals has decreased. Last year, Maria 01 startups secured 27 rounds, compared to 37 the previous year. The ecosystem has moved from early-stage rounds to more mature phases, which is reflected in larger individual investments. This growth in funding is strongly driven by foreign investors.

Defense Tech as a Magnet

Defense technology is also a significant factor drawing investors to Finland. According to a study by Danske Bank, Finnish startups accounted for 85% of all funding directed toward the Nordic defense and dual-use technology sector last year. In monetary terms, this represents $410 million.

Maria 01 Celebrates Its First Unicorn

Startups within the Maria 01 community raised a total of €337 million last year—more than triple the amount from the previous year. The startups belonging to the Maria 01 hub represent 14% of the entire Finnish startup field.

The community also celebrated its first unicorn (a company valued at over $1 billion) last year. Linear, a company developing project management tools, reached a valuation of $1.25 billion following its latest funding round.
