Danish-developed “Subway Surfers” reaches 1 billion downloads

Subway Surfers, an “endless running” mobile game co-developed by Kiloo and SYBO Games, has gone from being the one of the biggest Nordic-developed mobile games, to being one of the biggest mobile games of all time.

Subway Surfers reached 1 billion downloads last week, a milestone only a few games have ever reached.  The billion download mark comes on top of exponential growth since it’s release in 2012 – by early 2015, it had already reached 700 million downloads.

The game was co-developed by the Danish companies Kiloo and SYBO Games.  The games plot is simple – players take on the role of teenage hooligans who are caught tagging a railroad site, and must run down tracks to escape an inspector and his dog.  As you run, you dodge objects and other railway cars, and can collect gold coins.

The concept originated in the Animation Workshop in Denmark, where the SYBO founders produced an animated short of a similar story.

To celebrate their billion-download milestone, the developers have released an infographic of interesting statistics gleaned from their users.  View it here.
