Kubicam aims to be the future of videoconferencing. It will be the sum of a high-caliber 120 degree image, quality audio, and reasonable prices merged into a smart camera. Everything is set for a change in online communication systems.

Anders Eikenes, a physicist who has worked for CISCO, developing videoconferencing cameras, has shared with us his latest creation: the Kubicam. It is a new invention, where he contributes as a Co-Founder and CTO, promising to be the next big game-changer for videoconferencing.
Kubicam is a project that Anders and his partner started last summer in Palo Alto, California. It counts on the support of big firms within the industry and is the product of an effort to build something new. “We just started, we didn’t even had a place to stay. We figured we just wanted to start this new thing. We started a routine consisting in Skype calls at 6 am due to the 9-hour difference”, remembers Eikenes.
New method to videoconference
The Kubicam team is currently in the process of developing the hardware –being built in Sillicon Valley- and the software being programmed in Norway. The camera will have a 120 degree range, which will allow users to have a full view of the room at the best quality possible. Digital PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom), auto frame, no motors, open source of image processing, usable everywhere, and portable are among the functions that this videoconferencing camera will include. Also, as a part of the further development of the gadget, a smart audio, capable of discerning sounds, will be added to the functions. “It will recognize people in the room”, adds Anders.
The technology that will be used can nowadays be found among large firms and banking institutions at a price of USD 20,000 and up; the goal for Kubicam is to develop this at an accessible price for customers.
The prototype is ready
Focusing on a camera that will actually perform its intended functions well, Anders and his team of developers are concentrating on easy-to-use technology. This is the reason why the camera will work on the basis of a username on their website to ensure a stable connection.
“It is a device that you hook on the TV or conference room. You can talk to people who either have this system or either you have your laptop, because you can’t come to work, you’re sick, etc.- you go in your browser, put the URL for the room and you’re set”, says Anders confirming the team is finally ready with a prototype.
