German photo-sharing app focus on geography and privacy

We will at Nordic Startup Bits write about new upcoming startups located around in Europe. The first article will about the photo-sharing app, Shotnote, which is located in Munich (Germany). The company was initiated by the two founders Julian von Eckartsberg (CEO) as well as Nils Ziehn (CTO). Shotnote received funding from promenade German angel investors back in October 2014 and have used the funding to develop new features to the product. The startup is active in 38 countries and their main markets right now are Germany and Canada. The app is more private and location-based than other photo-sharing startups. The app has already made a minor pivot by switching from being a travel app to be a more general location-based app.

We started the app because we wanted to see our friends’ pictures from different locations when we were in that area. The app can be used in many different contexts. It could be if you want to leave a picture to your girlfriend, so she finds the picture when she is in your house. It could be also be pictures from a specific restaurants so your friends can see what you had when you were at that place.
– Julian von Eckartsberg, CEO Shotnote

The startup is right now pre-revenue but the team has a lot of ideas how to monetize on the service.

We have a lot of ideas on how we can make profit. One solution could be that the users get advertising for coupons when they are in the area.
– Julian von Eckartsberg, CEO Shotnote.

The app has recently launched that you now can share videos. Users can with the new feature share and disover videos of up to ten seconds In length.

Shotnote has always been about sharing special moments with friends at specific locations. Video is a fun a great way to keep these moments alive even better – to let friends know how we felt when we were at the place where they are right now.
– Julian von Eckartsberg, CEO Shotnote.
